At Dayton Children’s Hospital, the new Specialty Care Center was designed to bring more than 30 specialty clinics and associated diagnostic services together under one roof. The five-story facility creates a centralized destination for pediatric care, making it easier for children and their families to access the services they need while supporting a more collaborative approach among physicians, nurses, therapists, and care teams.

Children with complex medical needs deserve more than exceptional clinical care. They deserve an experience that feels coordinated, compassionate, and centered around them. When care teams work together in one place, families spend less time navigating the healthcare system and more time focused on what matters most.
As Dayton Children’s Hospital experienced rapid growth in outpatient specialty care, it recognized the need to rethink its campus strategy. Building on the hospital’s long-term master plan, Champlin Studios partnered with CannonDesign to create the Specialty Care Center, bringing more than 30 pediatric specialties together in one location. The new facility creates a destination where physicians, nurses, therapists, and support teams collaborate to deliver more connected care. Purposefully planned adjacencies, flexible clinic modules, and shared exam rooms improve operational efficiency while allowing the building to adapt as patient volumes and models of care continue to evolve.
Designed around the needs of children and families, the five-story facility creates an environment that feels welcoming rather than overwhelming. Daylight, playful design elements, sensory features, and intuitive wayfinding help reduce stress, while imaging, rehabilitation, pharmacy, and diagnostic services are thoughtfully integrated to simplify each visit. Collaborative workspaces strengthen communication among multidisciplinary care teams, creating the seamless coordination that is essential to caring for children with complex medical needs.
More than a specialty care center, the building reflects a new approach to pediatric healthcare. It creates an environment where collaboration, flexibility, and compassion come together to improve the experience of care for children, families, and the teams who serve them.
