Caring for the Community
The Bon Secours Harbour View Hospital Expansion brought hospital-based inpatient care to Suffolk, Virginia, for the first time by building on the strength of the existing campus. Rather than duplicating services, the new patient tower was thoughtfully integrated with existing emergency, imaging, outpatient, pharmacy, food service, and support departments, creating a cost-effective solution that maximized existing resources while expanding access to care. Throughout construction, carefully planned phasing allowed the hospital to remain fully operational as key clinical areas were modernized and new inpatient services came online.
Every design decision was guided by operational efficiency, patient experience, and long-term flexibility. The tower’s placement improves arrival, circulation, and campus identity while creating opportunities for future expansion. Shared infrastructure, including a new Central Utility Plant, was intentionally sized to support future growth, and shell space provides flexibility to respond as community needs evolve. Warm, light-filled interiors and a coastal-inspired design create a welcoming environment that reflects the Harbour View community while supporting healing and well-being.
Innovation is woven throughout the patient experience. Flexible inpatient units, efficient surgical environments, and Bon Secours’ first AI-enabled smart patient rooms enhance care delivery through integrated technology, digital communication, and advanced patient monitoring. More than an expansion, the project demonstrates how thoughtful planning, operational stewardship, and forward-looking design can create a hospital prepared to serve its community for years to come.
