When patients come to a healthcare campus for surgery, the experience should feel clear, calm, and carefully supported. The right design helps people understand where to go, helps staff move efficiently behind the scenes, and creates a stronger connection between care, comfort, and place. The right healthcare environments create experiences that feel intuitive, connected, and reassuring for everyone who walks through their doors. Every decision should help patients navigate with confidence, caregivers work more efficiently, and care happen more seamlessly.

As part of St. Elizabeth Healthcare’s long-term vision for its Florence campus, Champlin Studios worked alongside health system leadership to transform the campus into a destination for orthopedic care. Inspired by Saint Elizabeth, the patron saint of lace, the design weaves together the existing campus and a new addition through thoughtful architecture, creating a stronger identity while improving how people move through and experience the hospital.

The transformation extends well beyond the building’s new public face. A reimagined arrival sequence, intuitive circulation, and a light-filled public concourse strengthen connections across the campus while improving access for patients, families, and visitors. Behind the scenes, renovated and expanded operating rooms, pre-operative and recovery areas, and carefully planned staff circulation improve workflow and increase capacity, all while allowing the hospital to remain fully operational throughout construction. Views to surrounding gardens and a warm, welcoming material palette further reinforce an environment centered on healing and well-being.

More than an expansion, this work reflects a thoughtful approach to healthcare design, one that connects people, place, and purpose while creating a stronger foundation for exceptional orthopedic care.
