Libraries are among the few places where everyone belongs. They are places to learn, gather, create, and connect. As communities continue to evolve, libraries must do more than provide access to information. They must foster interaction, inspire discovery, and create welcoming environments that strengthen the civic fabric of the neighborhoods they serve. They must connect people to one another.
Serving as both a civic anchor and a resource for 40 branch libraries, the Main Library serves as both the heart of its downtown community and the cornerstone of the entire library network. Following the approval of a 10-year capital levy, Champlin Studios partnered with the Library to identify strategic investments that would extend beyond facility improvements to elevate the overall visitor experience and position the Main Library for the future.
Our work reimagined the South Building atrium and Vine Street Plaza as vibrant, people-centered destinations that better connect the library to the surrounding city while creating flexible spaces for gathering, learning, events, and everyday interaction. Warm, inviting materials, improved circulation, and stronger connections between interior and exterior spaces encourage visitors to linger, explore, and engage with one another.
Supporting these visible transformations were critical infrastructure improvements that ensure the building continues to serve the community for decades to come. From modernizing the skylight, smoke evacuation system, and elevators to addressing long-term plaza performance and maintenance challenges, every decision balanced stewardship with experience. Together, these investments reinforce the Main Library’s role as a welcoming civic destination where people, ideas, and community come together.
